Question on ES

I have 1.7m rows in xf_search_index and it has been causing me issues (it crashed). My forum has 125k posts and almost 4.7m posts. My question is if I get ES can I truncate xf_search_index? Also, is there anything else I can get rid of?

Yes, the search index table should be emptied if using XFES.
