Yes. This is exactly the way we have done it on one of the forums I manage.You create the group and give that group permission to the sub forum. The sub forum should have private ticked. (Node permissions)
Then create a user upgrade that adds that group when they pay. You do this in ACP>Users>user upgrades
User Access to upgrades is via their account settings.

Yes of course, either way can work. The method you choose would depend on what you want to do exactly. For very simple see the forum or not, private can be the simplest. For more varied permissions, unticked and set as required.Ticketing the private box is not required. Setting the permissions to allow / disallow by usergroup is what makes it work.
