@JohnLogar Could you describe, with a real example, of how you intend this addon to be used and its goals achieved?

I can see it's potential but really don't see how it achieves that, so thinking perhaps I'm way off on how it's intended to be used.

Thank you for the most recent update. This fixed the error that prevented me from trying it out.

Can you add the option to exclude specific threads, based on thread prefixes, to be included in the POTW?

For example, any thread associated with a particular thread prefix will not be shown on the POTW. This would go a long ways towards separating attention from discussion threads versus non-discussion threads that are getting more reactions.

Thanks.

Hi @Mouth , great question!

The idea behind POTW is to highlight the most appreciated posts each week — for example, posts that hit a certain reaction score. So if someone shares a great photo, guide, or insight and it gets enough likes, it gets featured on a special /potw/ page.

It’s a fun way to reward quality content and give members recognition. I'm also working on tracking how many times a user has won and showing that in their profile/postbit.

Hope that helps clarify the goal — happy to hear how you’d like to use it too!

Hi @beansbaxter ,

Glad to hear the latest update fixed the issue for you — thanks for confirming!

That’s a great suggestion. Adding the ability to exclude threads by prefix makes perfect sense, especially for communities that use prefixes to separate content types like discussions, announcements, support, etc.

I'll add this to the feature roadmap. I'm look into implementing a simple way to select one or more prefixes to exclude from POTW in the next version.

Appreciate your feedback — keep it coming!

Can you make this instead admin selectable? For example any post we click ... dots and select "Make it POTW" or "Add to POTW"
Thank you for the suggestion! That’s definitely a useful idea for forums where admins want more manual control.

However, this falls more into a custom requirement tailored for specific community workflows. I’d be happy to implement this feature for your forum as a customization — it would involve adding a “Make it POTW” option to the post menu and updating the backend logic accordingly. Feel free to message me directly if you’re interested, and I can do it for a small fee.

I like this add of very much but can I offer some thoughts
  • It seems quite slow on my forum - perhaps this due to the size of the forum?
  • You can also see that there are some minor formatting issues with the small avatars/usernames/etc which may be down to the theme that I'm using?

Thank you for the kind words and valuable feedback — I truly appreciate it!

In terms of the loading speed: the add-on is built to be efficient, but performance can be influenced by the number of weeks selected in the backend settings. If a large number of weeks is set, it can impact loading time slightly due to the volume of data processed. However, I noticed that your setup is only pulling data for 1 or 2 weeks, which is optimal — and in my testing, the load time was very reasonable.

Also, the potw page use pagination (10 posts per page or customise), which helps ensure performance remains solid, even on larger forums.

As for the formatting issues with avatars or usernames — that’s likely due to your custom theme’s CSS. The plugin uses XenForo’s default styling.

If you truly enjoy this add-on, I’d really appreciate it if you could leave a rating or review. Positive feedback encourages the development of more free and fun add-ons for the community.

Thanks again for using the add-on — I’m glad you're enjoying it overall!

Many thanks for the rapid response and I've left you a review which I hope helps!

Can I just confirm how it works please?

When it says "Week of 3 May 2025" does that means week ending on the 3 May 2025 (or possibly 2 May 2025)? The reason I ask is that my current top post for that week is dated 28 Apr 25.

In my mind, the week of 3 May 2025 would be 3 -9 May 25 inclusive but perhaps others may feel differently?

Great question, and I appreciate you checking for clarity!

The "Week of 3 May 2025" refers to the week ending on that date—so it includes posts made from 27 April to 3 May inclusive (Sunday to Saturday). In your example, a post from 28 April would correctly fall into that week's range.

I understand the wording can be a little open to interpretation, so I’ll consider rephrasing it in future updates to make it clearer—perhaps “Week ending 3 May 2025.”

Thanks again for the feedback!

Thanks. I appreciate your rapid reply and agree that "Week ending 3 May 25" would make it clearer!

You're very welcome! I'm glad that cleared things up.

I'll definitely plan to update the phrasing to "Week ending [date]" in an upcoming release to avoid any confusion—thanks again for the thoughtful suggestion!

Users on my forum are very keen on your addon and have suggested that one way to enhance it may be to have the threads for each week auto posted into a thread/forum? They could then watch the thread forum so would be notified when it changes.

That’s a great suggestion, and I’d be happy to help with it. Since it’s a custom feature specific to your community’s workflow, I offer it as a paid customization. If you’re interested, feel free to DM me and we can discuss the details further.

JohnLogar updated Posts of the Week with a new update entry:

New Widget Feature: "Post of the Week" Now Fully Customizable with Image Hiding & Limit Options

I've just released an exciting update for the Post of the Week (POTW) Add-on! 🎉 This update introduces several key improvements, including:

  • Customizable Post Limit: You can now control how many posts appear in the widget using the "Number of posts to display" option.
  • Hide Images Option: A new feature allows you to hide images in post content while keeping reaction icons visible. This option is perfect for keeping your widget clean without losing...

A manual post of the week option could be useful tho. It's not a big deal anyway, just manually adding the post record to sql table. I wish you did it on this update..

Thank you for the suggestion! I completely understand the value of having a manual "Post of the Week" option, and I appreciate your feedback.

While this feature wasn't included in the current update, it's definitely something worth considering for future releases. For now, you're right that adding the post manually to the database is a quick workaround. However, I'll be sure to keep this on the radar for an upcoming feature!

Thanks again for sharing your thoughts, and I’m glad you're finding the current features useful!
