Add-on Postal / Zip code proximity search

I'm looking to create an addon that takes a 5 digit (whole number) US postal code (zipcode) and returns entries that are within X miles or km from a record entry. So when a user wants to search one of my addon directories, it can work either of two ways: (1) records are returned within order of the proximity they are to a zipcode; or (2) a more complicated entry where the user has a dropdown in the search that will provide 1, 5, 10 and 25 mile/km search results. Another option is simply adding that search to search a custom user field that allows zipcode. Happy to chat, DM me please as well for more details and to discuss.

Have you considered to use the users location (from browser or device) as the first way o fetch location and zipcode method as fallback?

Yes, good suggestions. However, much of the time users will be search for results in specific locations rather than where they may be logged in.
