I can log in using Face ID fine when a passkey is set up in iCloud however if I try to use the same passkey or use 2FA I have to scan a QR code with my phone rather than use the device biometrics. This is a fingerprint scanner.

Any ideas about how to make the process more connected and seamless like for other SSO?

Thank you for reporting this issue. We need a little more detail to look into this. Whether the browser offers the Mac's fingerprint reader or a QR code depends on the browser and on where the passkey is stored, so please let us know the following.

  • Which browser and version do you use on the MacBook (Safari, Chrome, or another), and which macOS version?
  • Where was the passkey created and where is it stored: on your iPhone, in iCloud Keychain synced to the Mac, in the browser's own password manager (e.g. Chrome profile), or in a third-party manager?
  • On the same MacBook and browser, does the normal 'Passkey' login button offer the fingerprint reader, or does it also show a QR code?
  • When the two-step verification page opens, does the QR prompt appear on its own straight away, or only after you click the 'Use passkey or security key' button?
