opensearch Or Elasticsearch?

Why isn't opensearch suitable?

On one of my client's systems, opensearch uses a tenth of the ram since we switched to elasticsearch. I wonder if it is the same case for Xenforo.
That may just be the app's characteristics, but it was drastic.

As someone running a site that needs 17gb of minimum memory to run elasticsearch, i'm curious to see if it'd use a lot less ram.

Just adjust your Java to limit elasicsearck memory usage.

Already done it.
Site fails to respond if it's under 17gb currently. A year ago that was 14gb.
I limit it to ~500mb higher than the minimum of what the site needs to respond over HTTP.
This minimum amount keeps growing. And i know i have to hand it another 1gb of memory when the site starts stuttering.

All kinds of tuning was done to search to lower the amount of memory consumed.

I'm more than ready to try something else.

Damn, i need another 1gb just today, the site started stalling again.
We're up to 18gb

I turned off a bunch of search options and reindexed the search but it did not help.

The only thing i can think of is to turn the maximum pages that can be returned way down ( we have it jacked way up ), but that means nobody can search or find old content , which on our forum, is very useful.

it doesn't sound like there's any valid reasons to not try opensearch for lower memory usage.

How large is your ES data, by the way?

For a 60 million post forum, this is what I got:
# du -msh /var/lib/elasticsearch/
13G /var/lib/elasticsearch/

ES consumes 16 GB of RAM in total.
But I only allocated 12 GB via config:
# cat /etc/elasticsearch/jvm.options.d/jvm.options
-Xms12g
-Xmx12g
