I want unregistered users to only be able to see my "welcome..." node. I set that node's permissions to "allow" for that user group, and on General Permissions for that user group i selected "not set" for View and View Mode. But, unregistered/unconfirmed users cannot see any nodes. How can I change this? I want them to see a "welcome" node with general info and instructions for how to subscribe to my forum.

That will prevent them viewing the whole forum.

You will need to allow that and revoke permission for the nodes you don't want them to have access to.

Ok cool. Is there any quick way to do that other than going into every node permission?
Actually, although that worked, it removes those other nodes from my view as an administrator too.

Ok thanks. I have permissions fairly well figured out but the user I was using to test it was an administrator who somehow had "unregistered/unconfirmed" showing up under "secondary user groups".
thanks for the help. I have spent the last four days getting my forum set up, and I'm not suicidal so that is good.
