Node permissions questions?

I'm changing the settings of a particular node to only be viewable to members of a certain usergroup.

The question I have is, rather than showing 'no threads to display' can I show a custom html page?

You can show an appropriate message using a notice. But to show a completely custom page requires an addon to change the controller response based on permissions. You should post a request:
