XF 2.1 Modifying the User Postbit area in threads

I'm looking for help on modifying the user postbit area in threads, looking to:

• Remove how the Avatars currently work, I don't want it to be put into a rounded or square shape, I want the image to show 100%.
• Want to expand the width of the postbit area.
• Possibly want to embed a background image in this area based on usergroup.

I've accomplished the first two points, I found out how to put an image in the background via CSS, but can't get it working with specific user groups.

If anyone can shed light on that, that'd be very appreciated.
