XF 2.3 Message Icon (Red) Number mismatched with actual number of new messages

Recently upgraded to 2.3

A number of users have reported that they are getting the RED alert icon hovering over their message/mail icon and that upon entering their messages, they notice that the number displayed in red is not the same as the actual number of messages.

The issue has been "resolved" by some people by logging out and logging back in, or refreshing. However, some members haven't been able to "resolve" it by using the same methods on their own. I have a lot of older users on the site and as for myself, I'm not sure sure if the alert number is referring to all notifications or just direct messages which might explain the differences.

Are members just misinterpreting the number? Stupid question, I know, but I can't seem to replicate this myself.

I finally was able to "replicate", er, stumble into this. Notice the Red number shows a 3 but the highlighted alerts number 4. I just downgraded from 2.3.4 to 2.3.0 for other reasons, and this "issue" persists. It is not a showstopper, but it is noticable (i.e. annoying) enough with members to cause nuisance supports requests.
