Man facing jail time for embedding video

DHS should change their name to Department of Broadband Security. Seems their recent work only involves enforcing corporate interests.

Ever wondered why DHS of all agencies is heading this operations? Probably the fact that they don't require much paperwork to seize property, and charge people, in the name of NATIONAL SECURITY.

I think you mean DHS should change their name to the Department of Corporate Security :p

Yeah, but he wasn't serving or hosting the stuff, just linking! The implications are staggering! If you link to material that someone lifted from someone else.

From the article:
Careful about pasting stuff, you might be next!

Seriously it's ridiculous. It also doesn't help that our legal system allows copyright protection to be taken to the extreme. I'm all for copyright protection and patents, but there's a line between someone linking to something and actually hosting it themselves and knowingly committing such crimes, and I don't think simply linking to them counts as something to be thrown into jail for. Warned, maybe fined, but a Go Straight to Jail card? Nope.

YouTube has more than enough videos that they actually host until they're found. When are they getting shut down?

The American government is broken beyond repair.
Corporate America owns the government.
This is the way it's always been though. Right now the only terrorists, as stated a few posts back, are the government.
Case in point:
Banks are allowed to legally manipulate your funds to their own benefit. It happens every day that some poor sucker expecting 1 overdraft fee ends up with 3-5 because banks automatically pay out the highest transaction first, taking from the pool, making less available for the lowest. Anywhere else, this would be considered theft, however in the corporate banking world , it's ok, because they've paid off the government to look the other way.

YouTube has more than enough videos that they actually host until they're found. When are they getting shut down?
Google's bribed enough officials to be ignored by the government in this case, unfortunately.

ICE, DHS, these idiots need to focus on their JOBS, that being immigration and homeland security . Instead, they're just whoring themselves out to corporate America , ignoring a little thing called the Constitution and acting as judge, jury and executioner.

The internet used to be cool, not so much anymore. Might as well start buying domains and hosting packages from the government directly in order to simplify the castration process.

My tinfoil hat was burned quite a long time ago. Took a while to burn though. Odd that.
Should have had a warning though surely? So that the original content providers can see the neccessary steps being taken.

So if I link to YouTube, the video is not mine......

Or if I link (not embed) a video to ABC NEWS or CBS NEWS, does that mean I'm in trouble?

How about if a link a video (not embed) to Sports Net .... They have share buttons.....

Why is Home Land acting more like The FBI, but with to much power and out of control?

From what little I did read, wasn't he linking to illegal sites?

from what I can tell by reading the PDF, it has something to do with direct advertising (Ads) associated with the links ie, making money off of providing links ($ amounts are in the PDF) to 9 particular streaming sites (who were also taken down). It also lists the NBA, MLB, NHL, NFL, WWE (PPV) and UCF (PPV) as the illegal streams.

This is dirtbag psyops crap and I am sick of it, if your going to try to incrementally take away the rights MY (OUR) constitution promised me (every American) the day I (we) was(we're) born in this country...please do it in a way that's not so G*D-D*MN BLATANT... It is clear you are using a citizen who did nothing wrong as an example to show the need to facilitate control you don't need nor have the right to wield all for a cause that is against the better interest of the WORLD as a whole.

3 thumbs up for this post from me. Wow, I feel like I wrote this post myself...word for word. BUT, I didn't. EqNoble, thank you for your sentiments. I feel and think the same way. My personal thoughts: Ron Paul has my vote. The Illuminati does not. Hmm, note to self: "Toddy boy, don't get political.". ...just put the computer down and walk away slowly.:ROFLMAO:

IDK, Sounds illegal to me. Sound similar to a warez site.
I try hard to remove links to websites that contain copyrighted material for download like scanned copies of auto repair manuals.
It's an endless fight.
You-Tube provide instructions how to embed videos, so I see no harm there.

Trouble is; what constitutes an "illegal site". They don't usually have banners warning you of such. So you link to a site and they are declared "illegal" (by due process?) and now you're on the hook? If they shut down the illegal site then the link is broken right? I feel safer already.

I can connect with that.
One can try to protect the users from themselves, broadly speaking, that's why the disclaimer is there:
"("we") are not responsible for the content of any messages posted" or words that effect - just using XF's there as an example.
Your team will miss things, that's a certainty. Staff will clean it up and way before your host starts banging on your door. Or worse.

I understand your point. But what is the purpose of this site? To be a portal to video streaming links?

I'll just fan the flames here a bit:

The Department of Homeland Security has accidentally seized 84,000 innocent domains. This time, Immigration and Customs Enforcement accused the wrong domain of hosting child porn. Unfortunately, that didn't just shutter one blameless domain -- the knock-on effect killed all the other domains on its shared hosting service. In IT Blogwatch, bloggers ponder the implications for the return of COICA.
