Tag pages are in theory awesome for both usability and SEO. Xenforo itself offers a highly fragmented experience with different content types relating to a topic scattered across addons. Tag pages offer content from everywhere on a single location. Tag pages could be highly engaging valuable pages that offer all content about a specific topic.
Tag pages are quite boring and not engaging at all. They do not showcase what it valuable about the connected content. Its just a list of 10 pages long, which are a drag to go through and hopefully find what you need.
In my view a tag page should look like and work like a news media portal. A landing page that showcases every content type in a way that is optimal for that content type. On desktop and especially offer a splendid mobile browsing experience. And not only that, it should also be interactive. Users should be able to react to, watch, respond to and post new content right from the page.
This would entail displaying blocks per content type:
Of course if you a dozen or two of majors addons then there will be similar interactive blocks for those. I for example would have such blocks for Calendar, blogs, reviews, social groups, articles, wiki, store, knowledge base, etc.
The page should also have a Watch function, so that members and guests can subscribe to new content that gets added to the tag.
It would also be nice to display a members watching this tag block, with avatars grid. This way the user would see members with the same interest.
Another feature that would be useful is to have a 'related topics' block, so that users who are interested in this tag, can also have a look at tags on a similar topic.
Last but not least, it would be nice to have tag synonyms, so that we avoid duplicate pages that compete with each other.
If this page is displayed in a visually pleasing way with various functions for users to engage, then tag pages would become enjoyable, interesting and engaging to use.
These would also become more valuable for SEO because it can be displayed with the correct schema / structured data.
I used to get a lot of incoming traffic from tag pages when I had tag pages highly modified on vbulletin. Now on xenforo I have them noindexed because they are not bringing organic traffic and Google does not considers them valuable. They currently just waste your crawl budget.
it would be really nice if tag pages would become much more valuable, pleasurable to scroll and slide trough as well as engaging.
