Hi Xon,

This is great! My only issue is that when users leave the pc, its still running in the background so it will say a user was active in a thread "a moment ago". Not a big issue however is there anyway to fix this?

Hello,

Getting the same error on our Forum as well. We are hosted by Xenforo Cloud.

I missed the email notification for this thread, and after that XF doesn't send additional email notifications. For reliably support, please open a ticket on my site in the future.

Hi,

What I haven't been able to get working is for a regular registered user to see a live update.

The update counter is working correctly, and conversations too, but I haven't managed to get the threads working.

I enable these permissions for the admin and I can see live threads, but when enabling the same permission for a registered user, it doesn't work.

Am I missing something?

Why are there 2 options?

You need to either opt the forum to have live-threads by default (nodes => forum in question => advanced options), or use the thread tools dropdown to enable live threads for just that thread. This is what the 2nd permission is for.

Just to double check, I figued "enable live updates for thread" is to allow permission to manually create live threads, per thread. So almost like a moderation option, so this;

To test my understanding, I revoked permissions via admin usergroup, my user (admin) and the forum;

... But I can still see the 'Start live thread' option. The same is true when I mark 'never' for "enable live updates for thread"

It's made me doubt my understanding of that option. Would you mind kindly confirming I understand correctly? Is it to allow the option to start/enable a live thread manually, or is it something else?

I only enable this feature for 90 minutes (football/soccer match) every week or so when the post volume is there to, so it's taking me a little bit of time to test/play.

The FilterThreadFields is not this add-on, and that bug report is so heavily redacted it is basically useless for isolating the code-path which is triggering it, but I'm confident it is not any of my add-ons

Hi Xon,

I’m evaluating Live Content for a busy XenForo 2.3 community and wanted to clarify a few points about the current 1.5.4 behavior before purchasing.

My main concern is the experience for someone trying to catch up in a fast-moving thread.

1. Is there currently a per-user pause/resume control for live updates?

2. If not, can new replies be detected but held behind a notice such as “12 new replies” instead of being inserted immediately?

3. Can automatic insertion be limited to the final page of a thread, or only occur when the reader is already near the bottom?

4. What happens when someone is reading an older page while new replies are posted? Are those replies still inserted into the page they are viewing?

5. Does polling stop or slow down when the browser tab is hidden, the device is idle, or the member has been inactive for a while?

6. Are there supported JavaScript events, template hooks, or other extension points that would allow us to add our own pause, buffering, and catch-up interface without modifying the add-on files?

7. Has the previously reported XenForo Cloud view-count amplification or background-polling behavior been resolved in the current release?

8. What polling interval and approximate number of simultaneously active thread viewers would you consider reasonable before server load becomes a concern?

Our intended behavior is that normal XenForo reading and posting must continue working if live updates are disabled or temporarily unavailable. We mainly want to avoid readers being overwhelmed or losing their place in very active threads.

Thank you.

A few additional technical questions occurred to me while considering possible growth and customization:

1. If 500 members are viewing the same live-enabled thread, does each member generate a separate polling request at every interval, or is any part of the result cached or shared server-side?

2. Is the polling interval configurable globally, per forum, or per thread? Does the add-on use any adaptive backoff when a thread is inactive, the member is idle, or repeated polls return no new content?

3. How does Live Content handle a thread crossing onto a new page? For example, if the current page becomes full while new replies are arriving, does it stop inserting, redirect to the next page, or continue beyond the normal posts-per-page limit?

4. When new content is loaded, are XenForo permissions, ignored-member rules, moderation approval, deleted posts, and other visibility rules reevaluated on every request?

5. How are edits, deletions, moderator actions, thread closures, and posts moved to another thread handled while someone has the thread open?

6. Does the current JavaScript expose a supported event or overridable method immediately before posts are inserted into the DOM? We may want to intercept that point and buffer incoming replies behind a “new replies” notice.

7. Is there a supported way for a separate add-on to stop and restart the poller without modifying Live Content’s files?

8. Are the returned posts already rendered through XenForo’s normal post templates, including third-party template modifications and add-on content?

9. Have you performed or received any representative measurements involving hundreds or thousands of simultaneous live-thread viewers? Even approximate request-rate, database-query, or server-load observations would be useful.

10. Would you permit a licensed customer to create a private extension or modified derivative for use on one production community and its staging/testing installations, with no resale, publication, transfer, or redistribution?

Thank you again.

If this is the kind of support (or lack thereof) I can expect from buying your products, then I may just have to look elsewhere - or create my own.

UPDATE: @Xon opened a support ticket for me on his website and fully responded to every one of my questions.

The XF support threads are easy to miss updates, especially when there are multiple in a row. Detailed questions are more appropriate to use the sales enquires ticket category on my site.

I've replied with more detail on my site, but this add-on isn't really that complex and was written quite some time ago, and that impacts the technology choices used in this add-on.

There hasn't been a large demand so investing considerable time to polish it hasn't been commercially viable
