XF 2.0 Like/Follow alerts turned off for new user registration

Is there a way to turn off alerts for likes and follows for new registrations by default? What about for existing users?

I feel that a busy board may be overwhelmed with too many alerts and I'd like to have all of those turned off by default, then let the user turn them on if they choose. Can this be done?

So, after thinking about it a little, it seems as if the way to handle this is to set the default value of the table in phpmyadmin.

xf_user_option -> alert_output ->comma separated fields to ignore by default.

Would this be the best way to handle it?
