When you buy the license, you get 12 months of support and updates included in the license fee. Once the initial 12 months is up, you can add a further 12 months of support and updates for a $40 fee.

You don't have to extend your support and upgrades for $40 if you don't want to. You will still have access to the versions of XenForo that you had before your license expired. The only thing you would miss out on would be ticket support. Community support would still be available.
