They are butt ugly, that's for sure.
Don't think we'll have any noise issues... new apartment buildings are near sound proof, and strict body corporate pretty much rules out most loud noise. Friends of ours have apartments in different buildings, still yet to have any noise issues from other tenants. Pretty strict rules in them nowadays so people don't start killing one another.

There's thicker, fire retardant, and noise killing drywalls out there. Usually they're used in high rise buildings such as those that house flats. Living in mountain suburbia I don't have a noise issue except for late spring into early fall, where the birds will chirp for 24 hours straight if the weather is perfect. It's been rather cool lately and as a result my eardrums are very thankful.
