How hard is it to make a translation ?

What is the process to make a translation for an addon ?

Do you just make some kinda text file / XML file with entries ? Is the process manual ? or does the addon somehow show which phrases need translating ? If you have a translation for 2.2, is it easy to see what the changes are when making one for 2.3 (a new version?)

Is the format some text / XML file with a structure similar to this ?

I don't know about anyone else, but I do all add-on translations completely manually. I list the Phrases of the add-on in the admin panel and translate them again on the admin panel. After the whole process is finished, I export the language file of the add-on.

One-to-one translation does not always make sense, so an automatic process can give erroneous results. At least there is no easy way for translations that I know. Depending on the number of Phrase used in the addon, translation can sometimes take days.
