haha, it can be challenging to photograph pets, especially in low light if your not going to use a flash. A correct exposure is a simple combination of three important factors: aperture, shutter speed, and ISO. Obviously there are a tone of factors but just keep that in mind

I have a German Shepherd/Lab mix and a Jack Russell Terrier. BOTH would rather sniff the camera than let me take a pic. grrrrrrrr...
I did manage to sneak up on them and get this shot. Not exactly portrait material, as it was taken with my iPhone and my finger got in the way.

My girl is exactly the same, getting her to stay still is very difficult, and I just cannot capture her personality, have tried hundreds of times.. just have to keep trying I guess!

Just distract them with a toy:

That's my sister's dog Bonnie... Shortly after that picture was taken she tried to eat the camera.
