I just upgraded one of my XF instances to a VPS.
    I am using InmotionHosting.com.

Now that I may have opened up some doors on the ability to tweak various settings.

Are there any specific items I should check into right off to enhance my user's experiences as much as possible?

I have noticed - for example - I still have an occasional timeout when uploading images.

    Optimize your settings.

For starters, how many people are normally on your site at any given time? Add into how much resources you have and proceed to optimize your php and mysql

Your site should not be timing out during uploads. Check your server access logs for errors and also do a ping / trace check on your site to make sure nothing on the way to your site isn't having issues.

For the timeout, change your PHP settings, like the maximum upload size and server timeout...
