Is Thread Tagging Really That Neccessary For Forums?

My members love tagging, we also use it to alert people to site updates aswell, it works a lot better than notices / announcements.

We get users landing on tagged pages via the search engines, so yes, I think it's useful.

It doesn't have a big effect on how your site is indexed, at least with Google (not sure about others). Tags, if done wrong, will actually dilute your page rank, and tag clouds have almost no bearing whatsoever.

+1 for user tags. I sometimes wished I could tag people especially when I write a post which I want them to notice.
