You could also set up a simple webserver definition to do the redirect at that level.
If SEO is the reason behind it - I don't think there's much benefit in doing so. SEO works based on the destination, so any redirect from the domain to the destination will index the destination, not the domain it came from.
I do this type of thing for my domain variants - so example.com.au will redirect to example.com - it's trivial to set it up to redirect to a specific URL on example.com rather than the root.
