XF 1.5 Is It Possible To Inspect An Input Field?

I want to grab the input field "Your name or email" and test it to see if it contains the character "@", and if so, blank out the field before it's passed to XenForo. Can I do that?

It could be done with custom development but it may help to explain what you are trying to do as there may be another solution.

I really don't like "explaining what I'm trying to do" because I usually get a solution back which doesn't quite solve the problem and doesn't do what I want to do in the first place.

Nonetheless, I'm trying to disable sign-on by e-mail address. We discussed this before.

Are you sure there's no sort of override that can inspect an input field and muck with it? Some sort of .css or .html file?
