I'm looking for a free, open-source, cross-platform DNS software for an in-house network. Does anyone have suggestions? I know there are several options, just looking to see if anyone would share their experience and opinions.

Linux and BSD are chock full of those kinds of things. Won't be hard to find.
Check what free routers that run on BSD like PFsense and OPNsense use.

I run both open source routers in my office and they're frickin' great.

That's what I use.

I've always wanted to lock down a few PCs (secretary, other staff) to a limited number of websites, so I've wanted to see what software would do that, but i've never accomplished it.

My son has something that locks down his kids internet and blocks all ads from the network. I'll ask him what he has done.

Its a pretty standard feature. You set the router to your ISP name server or better to Googles, then use DNS pass through. Your lan computers you set to the query the router.
