XF 2.1 Instant notifications without reloading the page

I think XF 1 did this, didn't it?

Is this possible in XF 2? If not, is there an addon that can do this?

Notification updates are sent along with any other Ajax action that is taken on the forum (such as open an overlay modal, a member tooltip, posting a message, etc.). Regular standalone pulls for new notifications would require an add-on though.

Did it function differently before XF2? Or was there an XF1 add-on that did this, that never got updated for XF2?

XF1 was the same so if it functioned differently on your site then you must have had an add-on installed.
