The word alternate in English means to switch back and forward (verb), not the same as alternative which as an adjective describes another option or, as noun, is another option. HOWEVER in US English, alternate also means alternative.

However this uses both:

ie alternative as an alternate for alternate. Or is it alternate as an alternative for alternative. Or is alternate an alternate for alternative?

Confused yet? There should be some consistency and use either the British English word or the US English word.
