Would be nice if @ mentioned users had option to subscribe to thread they were @ mentioned in. This is standard (therefore expected) behavior on all other social media. If another member explicitly adds them, then they intend them to be in the conversation. Of course this could be abused, but you can limit @ mentions based on groups (e.g. new users with 0 posts cannot @ mention, members with <25 posts can only @ mention 1 person, members with > 25 posts can @ mention up to 5 people, moderators - 10, admins - unlimited. Also, if someone blocks you then you should not be able to @ mention them (not sure if this is the case).

On all other media there is something like private friends and more privacy options. Hence, it makes sense to auto subscribe there when mentioned.
In XF, however, Thread's visibility is handled by admins. So it makes absolutely no sense to auto subscribe someone. He will get an alert anyways. If he opens that thread he can decide to either interact with that thread, subscribe or ignore.

This has nothing to do with privacy/visibility - only notifications. I'm suggesting including @ mentions in the existing "Automatically watch content you interact with… " setting
