XF 2.1 In-Between Ad

I found some questions/solutions to this for previous versions which don't seem to work anymore.
Is it possible for me to add some code in between two nodes on the index page so that I could place an ad there? Preferably without an add-on

It's potentially possible by injecting the ad in the for each loop for the nodes, utilising the node ID.
