Importing a forum--what triggers password change to bcrypt?

Considering importing a SMF board, and wondering what triggers the password change to bcrypt...

I've read conflicting answers:
- one post said a user's password is updated to bcrypt as soon as they sign in for the first time.
- another post said the password isn't switched to bcrypt until the user actually changes it.

Which is correct?

Whenever a user logs in, their password should automatically be upgraded to the bcrypt format.
