Cross-promotion is key.
In Gallery: The mirrored image already links back to the forum post.
The suggestion is...
In that Forum Post: Link back to the gallery image if it has comments, so in the corner of the image you see the link: Comments (3), maybe a hover overlay, and permanent on mobile. Click it, it takes you to the comments of that image in gallery. Can still add comments if there are none by showing Comments (0) or Comment link.
Or a drop down nesting to view and even add comments that are mirrored. But I doubt that would happen so the link back with comment count would suffice!
Alternative suggestions welcome. Just like the idea.
