How to modify template modifications during install?

I need to use two different template modifications, due to changes in the relevant template in 1.3.

How would I go about doing this at addon install? I would want to have them both disabled, and then enable the correct one during install.

Is this possible? I see the SimpleXMLElement object gets passed to the install function - can I modify the data in this, and will it stick?

Ok, having a quick read of the documentation, changes will stick when made to the Object items...
