How can the members make out whether a user is banned?
Add them to a banned user group with appropriate title and styling.
There is also a banned avatar add-on.
I don't think they can. I suppose an admin could change their usertitle to "banned" which would serve as an indicator or apply a banned rank or something.
Edit: Ninja'd since 2010 >>> present day.
ACP -> Options -> User Discouragement and Discipline -> Add User Group on Ban
Aren't profiles of banned accounts not viewable by default?
nope (if i understood you correctly)
They're not by normal members.
When viewing a thread though, members have no idea whether other members are banned from their avatar or membercard.
The only way to do so automatically is with banned user group styling.
They are if you search from members page. Also their posts are visible and you can visit profile from there.
Actually the system is working against you.
I need to test this. Brogan, do you have a link to a banned user?
Edit: Ninja'd. So I was right
Banned members aren't identified here, there is no specific group/styling set up.
Ok, by default, you would get this message when visiting the profile of a banned account:
"This user's profile is not available."
Separate names with a comma.
