How to block pretend profanity using asterisks

I used to be able to block "*ss" by entering "*ss" and checking the "match exact word" box.

When such a forum is upgraded to 1.3.3, the "match exact word" box is gone and I see:

*ss --> *(expletive deleted)
press release --> pre(expletive deleted) release
bass drum --> ba(expletive deleted) drum

Asterisks are the most commonly used character to fill in for pretend profanity -- how do I detect this?

I realize that *ss is also a legitimate word, but this is for a travel security forum. Unless someone is trying to ride his *ss through an airport security checkpoint, or otherwise traveling by *ss, I don't see much of a an issue.

I would also find it useful if one or more successful implementations of profanity filters were published as a resources so those of us who need it aren't reinventing the same wheel. Not to mention that I hate maintaining & tweaking stuff like this.
