XF 2.1 How to auto populate custom user field?

Hello,

I was wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction about how to populate a custom user field once they have been approved?

I have created a the field in the admin backend but stumbling trying to figure out how to generate a random string to store in there while making it display to the user but not editable.
