XF 2.2 How does find unanswered threads work?

I hope this question isn't totally stupid:

On what search index or search option does /find-threads/unanswered rely? On my forum it only shows a few threads of the last days and I can't see why it's limited in this way.

XF 2.2 - Does the Unanswered Questions list only contain unread threads?

Looking at this functionality and it appears to only be showing unread threads. https://xenforo.com/community/find-threads/unanswered Is this correct? If I read a thread and then refresh, the thread is still listed but not bold, so marked as read. I'm guessing this is cache?
