XF 1.2 How Do User Groups Work?

Unlike on vBulletin, you have to go into config.php to make someone an administrator on XenForo.

That was just a comment. My question is this: How exactly do you make staff appear under Staff Online Now? You'd think that just by adding them to, say, the Moderation user group, they'd appear under there.

Unlike on vBulletin, you have to go into config.php to make someone an administrator on XenForo.

In order to make someone an administrator on XenForo you have to go to Admin CP -> Users -> Administrators or /admin.php?admins/. You only need to edit the config.php if you want to assign someone as a Super Administrator (Super Administrator can not be created or edited by an Administrator and always has all permissions in the ACP).

An user appears under Staff Online Now if you select Display user as staff when you add that user to Moderators (/admin.php?moderators/) or when you edit the user directly and select the same option.

User groups are primarily for permissions and styling.

Staff is a status which can only be set by making a user a moderator or checking the "Display as staff" field.

Note that users who are administrators but not moderators won't appear as staff unless that field is checked.

I mistakenly chose 1.2 as the prefix, and I believe "Display as staff" was added in 1.2.

DOTATalk Community, the XenForo forum I assist as an administrator, is running XenForo 1.1.4. How is it done there?
 
Only moderators appear as staff in 1.1.5 and earlier, unless you edit the template to add other user groups.

Where exactly is the Display as Staff link? Is it user group setting or a setting in each individual member? Just asking for future reference. Also, does it override any template edits done previously to make users show as staff?
