D djbaxter in memoriam 1947-2022 Feb 22, 2019 #2 That defeats the purpose of a 404 and will mess you up in search engines. The redirection will generate a 301 or 302 or 200 status code. Your search results will continue to be littered with nonexistent pages. With a 404 error the page will be eventually dropped by search engines. A 410 code will drop it sooner.
