Has Your Laptop or Computer Ever Been Stolen?

Lately I have been looking at free ways to keep my documents and files online. I've looked at Apple's iCloud and Microsoft's SkyDrive service. Hey doesn't google have one too? What's it called? Anyway I want a service like this because I plan on doing a lot of traveling later and do not want to have to depend on my Macbook all the time.

The bad thing abou those services is that you might lose stuff due to inactivity. I think I need a prepaid service as well so that my stuff is kept if I forget to access stuff.

I know that if my PC is stolen I have no way of tracking it but not so with my Mac.

How do you put a password on the Mac to keep it from being reformatted from a thief?

How do you create an Admin account that the thief can't erase or get into that had Back To Mac enabled?

Asking because of this article:

I wouldn't have cared if my laptop was stolen. Someone recently stole my canon 600d which I bought just a few months ago. It had so many weeks of picture taken from my vacations. :( I have a new one now. :)

Anyway, back to the topic. Google has Google Drive. I find it useful. They have their own version of Word, excel and power point. The other tool I use is Dropbox (this referral link will give me some free space :p). It's amazing and free. You can access your files from your mac or pc or android or ios. A lot of friends use it. I think you should get a dropbox account. (y)

Also theres Norton One to protect and track your computer is stolen.

Actually I would care if my computer was stolen.

Aww I'm sorry about your camera. I think they now make cameras with cloud storage capabilities now.

This way you won't lose your pics. Samsung Galaxy Camera?

I have a dropbox account. I think I only have 2gb? That's kind of lame man.

I'mma check out Google Drive. We don't really need Norton on the Mac.

I was talking about a real Dslr camera. :p I think canon may come up with cloud storage in future. They have been advertising wireless capabilities on their products a lot now.

Anyway, You can increase your dropbox to 5gb if you are into taking a lot of photos with your phone. See this: https://www.dropbox.com/help/287/en
Otherwise they have a $10/month pro account for 100gb.

Or there's Own Cloud if you want to build your own private dropbox.

You can take my computer, but you may not want to be physically anywhere near it once I know it's missing or after X amount of time (which ever happens first). Nope, can't say that would be good for your health. :sneaky:

As for off site backups beyond just CD / DVD / USB?

Mega: https://mega.co.nz
Yandex Disk: http://disk.yandex.ru
Ubuntu One: https://one.ubuntu.com
Google Drive: https://drive.google.com

I have others, but you need to know your way around the "Internet" via Tor

I had mine stolen about 18 months ago. Fortunately, I had purchased Carbonite subscription a few months earlier. I had good file security on the laptop. End result was me being pissed off about the theft, but after buying new laptop, I was able to recover everything.

This subscription stuff is ridiculous. I wouldn't be surprised if I got arrested for being in the wrong place at the wrong time (I'm in KKK country). If that ever happened and say uh I end up spending 10 years in Prison just for being in the wrong place at the wrong time when ship happens, after I get out, all my ship is gone...cause I didn't renew my subscription... or couldn't. But then I've heard of inmates being able to use FB from prison...so yeah I guess this is where good ole physical removable storage comes in handy. Now what if you bought a lockbox and buried your stuff in your yard. What if after you are gone for a long time, you find out that it's gone because the place you previously live got re-developed and bulldozers bulldozed your ship. That means your screwed. Nevermind those worse-class scenarios though. Stranger things have happened.

Yes 250MB file size limit and 10GB Bandwidth monthly. Limit is no problem for me because i use it for my own projects.
Box.com does have a 250MB file size limit if you use a free account.
I took another look at Box.com and their pricing list says they now offer 5GB for free. Signing up today. https://www.box.com/pricing/

EDIT: Oh ya'll were talking about file size limit, not total storage, my bad.
