XF 2.3 Has cumulative per-user attachment storage been added or planned?

I previously raised this issue in 2022:

https://xenforo.com/community/threads/how-is-attachment-quotas-not-a-basic-feature.205991/

Has XenForo 2.3 added any native way to impose a cumulative storage quota on ordinary forum attachments, or is this functionality planned for XenForo 2.4?

I am not referring to the maximum size of an individual attachment, image dimensions, attachments per message or the temporary unassociated-attachment limit. I am looking for a cumulative limit such as:

  • Registered users: 100 MB of stored forum attachments
  • Paid group A: 1 GB
  • Paid group B: 5 GB
XenForo Media Gallery already supports per-user storage quotas through user-group permissions, but members generally upload images directly to posts. That leaves administrators without a native way to prevent individual users from accumulating gigabytes of ordinary forum attachments.

Ideally, the system would provide:

  • Cumulative attachment-storage quotas based on user-group permissions.
  • A way for members and administrators to see current usage.
  • A clear error or upgrade message when the quota is reached.
  • Predictable behavior when a member changes user groups.
  • A way for members to locate and manage their existing attachments.
Does this functionality now exist somewhere I have overlooked? If not, is it planned, or is there a currently maintained XenForo 2.3 add-on that provides it?

It doesn't exist in the way you'd want it to. The current system is a per post/message, universal config with usergroup settings that have some control over how many attachments can be done at once and a size limit, etc. But none of that is really associated or measured against a user account in default XF. You would need a custom solution to achieve that goal. There is data stored in the table, xf_attachment_data that retains the info of the size and who uploaded, so the data is there to track that can be used for a solution you're looking for.

As far as existing addons that are currently available that add this function, I'm not aware of any on the market right now.

Just from a 3rd party point of view -- If a user is posting attachments to DM's/posts, etc., which consumes the space... that user would have to eventually delete some of the content to free up space, right? Or, buy more storage space? If people start deleting things from existing content, that's going to leave a lot of broken areas where something was attached and referred to, but subsequently deleted for storage management reasons. In any case, both the user and admins would need dashboards to manage what they've attached around the site.

Edit:
  • Registered users: 100 MB of stored forum attachments
  • Paid group A: 1 GB
  • Paid group B: 5 GB
Although, I'm not sure how fast you can burn through those storage limits. I guess it depends on what kind of content you permit and what size limits you have.

But just for fun... let's just say 100,000 members and the default floor is 100MB/user. That comes up to 11-12TB of usable storage with some management space, depending how it's configured and how you count it. Yikes... I think I need to go peek at our storage config and usable limits, lol.
