Hello
I am on 2.1 with four or five Add-ons
I will check that they are all 2.2 compatible?
My question is, I have heard that it is a good idea to disable them first.
is this needed?
And if so what happens when you disable and then re-enable an add-on?

I would also advise to do backup first (both files and DB), just in case something goes south, so you can quickly get back to working forum fast.

I appreciate that advice re backups
I do backups for all of my other personal files, words, pics movies etc
But when it comes to my forum and website I don't do it as often as I should

I'm with Siteground and they do a daily backup of my site.
I try to do one once a month and then download it to my local hard drive.

What do you mean by (Both files and DB)

Well, you need to backup files where you installed forum (root, or maybe forum dir, or wherever you installed it. Of course, it means you backup all files and directories below starting directory, not just first level of files), because upgrade will download new files so you need to have original (i.e. old) working files.

DB is database you use for forum.

You should do this just before you attempt to upgrade, so to save latest posts and settings. If everything goes well, enjoy. But, if something goes south, you'll need to restore both of them, files and DB.
