Forums in Read Only mode, when closed

What's the difference between this and changing the "post" permissions for the registered user group?

Isn't the purpose of a maintenance page (in this case, "we are currently unavailable") to prevent people from viewing errors, finding broken stuff or something you don't want your visitors to view while you work on resolving the issue or setting something up?

wow 10 years past and this has not seen the light yet!
I'd expect this to never become a feature as it is virtually impossible to implement, at least if the requirement is to reduce DB writes to an absolute minimum.

Forcing users into guests on the other hand should be fairly easy, but would not achieve the same effect as closing the board.

How is it hard to implement? All it takes is setting the post new thread post new post to NO and display a note on the front page that it is on a read only forum.

Have you read the entire thread?

The suggestion is to block (almost) all DB writes, so there is way more then just posting that would need to be disabled.
Even if there was support in the core to handle every situation that could cause a DB write, this would also need to be done in ever Add-on.

Disabling permissions does not solve that.

I have but it does not have to be the exact way suggested by OP. The suggestion revolves around forum in read mode only when closed. How is that going to be implemented is left to XF developers but the whole point of read mode is to prevent users from posting anything when board is closed.

With regards to the issue of members being mid-post when the forum goes offline, how about there is a 30 minute (or whatever) buffer before the shut down takes place.

No new posts can be made in this 30 mins, but members in mid-post can submit theirs. Perhaps an AJAX notice could appear saying on the Post Reply area saying "This forum is going in to Read-only mode in X minutes, please ensure you have submitted your posts by [time] or save your post as a draft to finish when we re-open"
