For those with established forums - how did you keep going?

I was wondering if anyone had some word of wisdom (or encouragement) for sticking with a new forum and battling through the no-member blues.

Everyone had to start with zero, so surely there's some right things .....and wrong things that you can do to help develop the community?

Keep making expert content on your subject so that people are encouraged to participate/reply and your site becomes known as a place that's good at what it does in your niche.
