XF 1.2 Font size to line height ratio

I note that the default for message text in xenforo is 11 point type with a 1.4 line height.

What's the optimal font size to line height ratio? If I, say, bump the message text up to 12 point, what should the line height be?

There's no ideal answer to that question. It depends on the font and on your preferences. Two fonts even with the same size will not fill their background the same way. If you want to know more about fonts, you can read that book. I've bought its first edition when it has been released and it was helpful. You can also read the last answer of this thread, that you will explain you more.

I've gathered that. Experimented with some variations, in fact, and ended up leaving things at 1.4.
