Duplicate Filter threads or subforums from Whats New.

We have an offtopic section and the threads in there have varying degrees of useful discussion, we also have some political topics occasionally.

A user has requested the ability to filter specific threads from Whats New, and I think it's a decent request that there's no decent work around at the thread level for that I know of. The workaround at the subforum level (which may be a more sensible level I guess), is a bit backwards as it involves watching all other subforums.
