Feature topics - increase visibility of ONE topic a day.

I'm looking to maximise the visibility of a single featured topic. Whether that be by pop-up, dedicated page (the topic will change daily) tab, sidebar plugin, notices or something more magical.

It needs to be highly visible whilst being easy and quick to comment/reply too. Think chatbox style/facebook wall/google circle/blog comment type scenario, but for one topic a day.

What's the best way to do this in XF?
    All suggestions welcome...

Hyperion did something cool with the Nodes As Tabs addon. He created a nav tab that links directly to a thread:

    The setup is described here:

That certainly qualifies as high visibility of a thread. And you can change the thread by editing the link forum ("Guide" is his case). But all such featured threads would have to be posted in the same forum (the forum underneath the link forum) if you want the tab to be selected (described in that post).

    Just an idea...

That would work Jake. I'd like to incorporate it with something else too.
The one thing that appeals to be so far is Jaxels XenPorta. http://xenforo.com/community/resources/8wayrun-com-xenporta-portal.90/
The recent news module may work with a bit of modification. Currently it only displays as its supposed to while on the portal page. There is an option to display it on the forum index, but there must be a hook missing somewhere as this particular "block" just does not display.
I think the two combined would achieve what I am after quite well...if I can get someone to fix it ;)

    Enable this option:

Then create a layout for 'index':
