I'm pretty sure it was more to make Facebook look better in the eyes of stock holders, since the acquisition was right before Facebook stock went public. If anything, I think potential average joe investors (like me) were irked that Facebook threw away a billion dollars. So, in other words: "Hey guys, come back to facebook!"Once you have the users, you can always add Facebook-like features - and now you are a Facebook competitor. Facebook makes a few wrong moves (ie. Security breaches) and people move over to Instagram full time.
He also said, Facebook does care about our privacy, you get the idea (hopefully).
