Download Quota

Discussion in 'Resource Manager Suggestions' started by DEREKTROTTER, Feb 3, 2012.

Not sure if this can be done but would be useful. Setting a limit to how many files a certain usergroup can download.
If several people go downloading multiple files at once, its gonna put a strain on some servers.

Just something i think can be controlled this way.

    Members: 3 Resources per day
    VIP: 10 Resources per day
    Platinum: Unlimited
3rd AnGle, Tracy Perry, Sunka and 8 others like this.

Also, is this gonna be restrictive to a certain filesize?

I would like to upload files over 100mb, but not sure if I could use this for it

Maybe allow redirects to external URLs

Forums aren't really suited to uploading such large files.
Many changes are required in SQL and PHP to accommodate that.

Wont be a problem, I could simply upload a .txt file containing the external links

I had wanted to make the usergrooup download limit suggestion but it slipped my mind. Thanks for posting this.

For big bandwidth users like our community with files up to 200Mb a daily download limit system would be more then welcome.

We currently are balancing on the edge of going into overusage at the end of the month and really need some kind of restriction to balance stuff a bit.

Is this something that is in the works for the RM?

Instead of posting "duplicate" how about a clear answer? That other thread is 1 1/2 years old.

The answer forums aren't really suitable for large files isn't the answer to the question as we do host these massive files.

Either please merge this thread or move it to the paid requests section as we badly need something like this.

Merged. Regardless of how old a suggestion is, its still open for implementation, multiple threads are not needed. New features will be announced in the appropriate forums, and not in suggestion threads. Especially for larger releases that this suggestion would entail. If you would like to see it, please like the first post to show your support. If you want to pay someone to do to it, please post in the appropriate request forums.

You may want to read this post by @Brogan, as it explains how we handle suggestions:

Instead of or in addition to number of resources, I would love the option to limit total bandwidth in 24hours like IP.downloads does. Pass quota for the day and it shows time remaining until refreshed quota

It has 8 likes so far and three threads. How many till it gets serious consideration? This impacts on performance and bandwidth. I would think it would be something you guys might want to pursue.

This is precisely what I need. I need to limit by group and by user, and this looks like it does it.

XF should have this feature (VB does). Otherwise, you get the potential for excessive server load by people who want to have every file in your resource manager (which I am using as a downloads manager on our site).

Thank you so much for this!

Yes, its a nice way to force all users to "fair play" with our resources. :)
