If they are blocking scripts (or something is breaking scripts), the like button will take you to a separate page to confirm the like. You can see this in action by right-clicking the 'Like' button and opening it in a new tab.
Typically I've seen this beforehand when a user has switched off javascript in their browser. If it's this, tell them to switch it on as it also affects other functionality in XenForo. Also telling them that javascript isn't java, it's sometimes switched off because they think it's the same thing and they've heard that java is bad.
