XF 1.5 Display last two "Latest Post" rather that one?

trying to booster the concept that content is king and time of last post not as relevant, we're trying to customize our forum tree to display the last two "latest post" rather than default one. Since it is core, this seems tricky to do as we don't want to write scripts that will make additional calls which would certainly lead to optimization problems.

Thanks. I had imagined it would as our own engineers (more familiar with wordpress) thought it was not just a styling/css issue.

Anyone have ideas on those members offering custom development services that this sort of project matches their skill set best with? I'm certain it's not a theme builder, etc.
