XF 2.3 Customizing Public Navigation

I wanted to create a nav bar tab for useful links (external sites, or internal pages, etc)

I created a category (let's call it "A") then a bunch of link forums under it

I added a parent nav "1" and linked it to the category "A" that contained the link forum. Bingo, works. I click the tab, I get cat "A" and the link forums under it. Easy.

Then I decided I wanted to better organize this. I created another category "B", moved some of the link forums to that, and added another nav "2" and put it under the parent nav "1" I created.

Now I have a drop down arrow that contains the link to category "B" I placed under the parent nav "1". Ok. When I click the "B" link, I get a page with the link forums under cat "B".

But when I click the tab, I only see the link forums that are still in cat "A". I guess, expected.

However, there is no widget on the left showing the other sub-nav groups. I was secretly hoping this would just happen.

What I want to do is create a parent nav, and then multiple sub-navs for each group of link forums. In this case, the parent nav would not point to a category I suppose. When the drop down is clicked, you see all the subnavs. That part is easy.

Then, when I just click the tab, I want to show a list of the subnavs on a page. As I'm writing this, I'm thinking if I create a category with subcategories, and the subcats have link forums, then I could point to the main cat for the tab and the subcats for the subnavs. So I'll try that.

But what I really wanted to have is a thing where when you click the tab, you go to a page that has a widget on the left of the subnavs, where you can then select one and see all the links within it (and the widget remains). Basically, like the Members tab where the left bar stays the same and the right side rotates through the "?key=####" field.

How does one create that?

That is heck of an interesting post.. 😜.
But, if I understood, you want a navbar change depending on a user. The only way I see this happening is by user groups. But, unfortunately that would need a custom addon. DM me if you wish to commission this work.

No, that's not the case. I just want it to function/look similar to the Member tab.
  • Let's call the tab "Links"
  • Drop down on Links shows subnavs
  • Click/tap "Link" or any subnav and you go to a page that shows widget on left with available subnavs and the selected subnav contents shows on the right (there would have to be a default selection)
  • Select another subnav and the contents update on the right
When you click through the Members widget, the URL updates with a "key"
I want to know how to duplicate this

That is not an available XF system.
Would you like me to build this?

Well, that's actually mildly surprising. I wish xfrocks' Widget Framework was still a thing I guess. I think you could do it with that.

For now, I'll find a work-around. Not wanting to spend a bunch of $ on it. I just figured there had to be a way to do what I was envisioning.

Another way to do it I suppose would be to create a Page with all the link on it, organize it the way I want (like a glossary, which I also want to do) and just link the nav tab to that page

Good call but a little of base. I'm not talking serious mony, maybe a small amount as I like to build these things. Give me a DM

Not sure why my thoughts are off base. What I was thinking was that possibly Widget Framework became useless due to XF2's functionality, which might have been why xfrocks (or someone else) did not re-write it for XF2 (I've been out of the game for a while....)

Anyway. I'll shoot ya a DM
