Regardless of whatever the answer, as far as I am concerned, using a backup is a safer way of doing things. Regardless of software. Just on the IPB side of things, if anyone is running 2.x boards and planning to move to Xen then I would suggest first upgrading to IPB3 to avoid waiting on a converter for the earlier versions.
